A Day In The Life of a Social Media Strategist

Posted by

Hello NYU! I’m Sammie Jo, and I’m thrilled to take you behind the scenes of my role as a social media strategist at Weller Media Agency. WMA is a global digital creative & marketing agency specializing in the music, entertainment and lifestyle space, with clients such as Live Nation, Sony Legacy Recordings, Universal Music Group, Disney, and more.

The Role of a Social Media Strategist

In the entertainment industry, social media strategists hold a pivotal position in shaping and implementing digital strategies for artists and brands. These strategies often aim to promote or sell a product as well as create connections with fans. It’s all about creating a roadmap for success in the digital world and executing this plan on a day-to-day basis.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Now, let’s talk about the heart of the matter — my daily responsibilities. Flexibility is key here because my day can take unexpected turns, but here’s a general overview:

Trend Research

Staying ahead of the curve is essential, as understanding what’s trending is at the heart of any social media role. I spend time reading updates from key platforms and newsletters (see the bottom of the post for some suggestions!), identifying current and upcoming trends, and relaying applicable key insights to my internal team or clients.

Crafting the Strategy & Comms Plan

Crafting the social media strategy is where the magic happens. At the beginning of a campaign, this means defining target audiences, setting goals, and deciding on content pillars that align with the aim. Then, it’s about taking stock of the current trends, the unique needs of the campaign, and melding them into an actionable content calendar (also called a comms plan) on a weekly basis.

Content Creation & Creative Collaboration

I then work closely with our Creative team of graphic designers, videographers, photographers, and others to bring our strategy to life. This involves coordinating content shoots, preparing shot lists, and writing creative briefs for social assets such as short-form videos.

Performance Analysis & Reporting

Analyzing performance metrics is a daily task. I assess data like engagement rates, reach, and conversion rates to understand how our strategy is performing. Flexibility is crucial here as we need to make real-time adjustments to optimize our strategy continually. On a weekly or monthly basis, I prepare comprehensive reports that illustrate the data in a way that’s easy for clients to digest.

Client Communication & Account Management

Client communication and account management are integral parts of my daily routine. This involves keeping priorities clear, deadlines communicated, and ensuring that all social media managers on a project have a manageable workload. This is done through regular check-in meetings and reviewing hours worked to ensure that we’re meeting the client’s scope of work.

Conclusion

There you have it, a glimpse into my daily life as a social media strategist in the entertainment industry. It’s a unique role that blends creativity with strategy in a field that is constantly evolving.
